Florida Residents Demonstrating for Foreclosure Assistance
By jason | April 8, 2008
As more and more Florida residents succumb to the struggles of mortgage debt and the ensuing foreclosure, citizens are becoming enraged and demanding that the government do more to help indebted homeowners. The activist group ACORN has convened in Tallahassee, the state capital, to protest what they see as widespread foreclosure due to predatory lending practices.
Setting up a tent city dubbed “Subprime City” outside the capitol building, the group is picketing and demonstrating for governor Charlie Crist to step up his efforts in helping citizens of the sunshine state to keep their homes. They also want consumer protection legislation passed that will inform future homebuyers of the dangers of sub prime loans and help avoid further catastrophes in the future.
Florida currently holds the third highest inventory of foreclosure homes in the country, with over 32,000 properties in some stage of the foreclosure process statewide. It also holds the second highest rate of foreclosure behind only Nevada, with one in ever 92 homes in some stage of foreclosure.
