Campaign Against Fraudulent House Repos Prevention Schemes
New York’s Staten Island District Attorney Daniel A. Donovan has partnered with the New York City chapter of Habitat for Humanity for a fight against fraudulent house repos prevention scheme.
The number of house repos in Staten Island is on the rise, with the impact weighing heavily on minority neighborhoods, according to William Carbine, New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s neighborhood preservation assistant commissioner. In the first quarter of this year, about 113 foreclosure auctions were completed in the North Shore section of Staten Island.
The growing foreclosure trend in the area not only attracted potential homebuyers but also unscrupulous people who want to take advantage of the vulnerability and desperation of distressed homeowners.
The Loan Rangers Public Awareness Campaign of the district attorney’s office and the Habitat for Humanity aims to educate consumers on fraudulent house repos prevention schemes, as well as relief programs for credit card debt and anticipation loans.
The group will offer seminars to community groups in the area about how to avoid illegal and fraudulent foreclosure prevention schemes, escape and avoid excessive debts on credit card by availing of low-cost or free financial planning programs and how to improve credit scores.
The seminars will also teach consumers how to use government-sponsored resources for tax preparation, how to avoid expensive tax refund loans, reduce borrowing cost and how to use lease arrangements or layaway to purchase appliances and furniture.
The staff of Habitat for Humanity and the district attorney’s office will distribute fliers and fact sheets that contain information on fringe financial products and fraudulent foreclosure prevention schemes. They will also explain the dangers of various fraudulent schemes and costly, high priced loans. Additionally, they will provide details on low-cost and free alternatives available to New York residents who are struggling financially.
The seminars will be offered to community organizations, schools or congregations in the area. In a press release, Donovan said that the current economic downturn has encouraged many unscrupulous businesses and people to prey on desperate homeowners who want to improve their financial situation and save their properties from foreclosures.
The statement said that these fraudulent companies and individuals would offer quick and easy relief to foreclosure problems. Donovan said that he is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help homeowners avoid fraudulent house repos prevention schemes.
