Homeowners Voice Out Opinions Against Foreclosures
Different independent organizations, churches, communities and families are rallying together to prevent foreclosures. Following the increase in New York foreclosures and in other areas such as California and Florida, more and more are being aware that having a foreclosed home is not entirely the homeowner's fault. In fact, foreclosure cases may well be an effect of the worsening economic crisis the US is currently facing.
The campaign to keep homeowners inside their homes is growing louder, as stories are passed on. ACORN, a community organizing group, seems to be gaining more attention as it helps families to keep their homes. It hosted a rally last Friday in Brooklyn Church to launch its campaign. It is also holding campaigns in 22 other cities in the coming days. By passing on the word through phone, text messaging and the Internet, more and more volunteers are signing up to help build their network of families facing foreclosures.
ACORN's chief organizer Bertha Lewis is firm about her group's advocacy, saying that they will continue to live in their foreclosed homes until they are forced by the police to get out. According to her, a lot of government officials have been addressing the problem by focusing banks instead of helping families to stay in their homes.
Furthermore, ACORN is saying that foreclosures should have been avoided had lending companies not released loans that are questionable and used government funding to give aid to homeowners facing the threat of foreclosures. Because of this, ACORN was born. It is a group of homeowners who resist leaving their homes despite being repossessed properties. Stories of homeowners locking themselves in their foreclosed homes are already widespread.
Even sheriffs have joined this advocacy. Some cities have suspended evictions despite orders for foreclosures. Sheriff Warren C. Evans of Wayne County in Michigan ordered all evictions to be suspended until the federal government executes its plans of helping homeowners who are facing foreclosures. Sheriff Thomas J. Dart of Cook County in Illinois had a lawyer review all foreclosures and eviction orders to help homeowners and families stay in their homes. Sheriff Richard K. Jones of Butler County in Ohio released an order to let homeowners stay in their homes if they don?t have anywhere else to go.
ACORN helps homeowners by rallying neighbors in a foreclosed home to give protection to the family facing foreclosure. Called Home Defenders, the campaign have already enlisted around 500 participants during rallies that are held every Friday and Saturday.
